Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) is a method of natural healing based on the practice of transmitting the Universal Life Force Energy through the hands. The name literally means Universal Life Force Energy, coming from the Japanese words Rei (supernatural force or spiritual intelligence) and Ki or Qi (Universal Life Energy). Reiki is usually described in the west as "spiritually guided life force energy".

A Reiki treatment is a spiritual practice because it works directly with energy, or "spirit". It is an ancient method of hands-on healing. It utilizes the universal life force energy to help with healing, balancing, relaxation and to reconnect your body and soul. After a Reiki session you should be feeling peaceful, alive, relaxed and with a powerful sense of well-being.

REIKI FAQ's

Reiki is “Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy”

What to expect from a Reiki session?

In person session:

Each Practitioner has their own unique way of giving a session, but this is a general overview. You should come to a Reiki session in loose, comfortable clothing or be able to loosen tight belts and clothing to allow the energy to flow freely.  You will normally lie on a massage table fully clothed, but if it is uncomfortable for you to lie down, the technique can be done while sitting in a chair. It can be given in almost any setting, including a chair or hospital bed, through casts and bandages, and in any state of health.

In a standard session the practitioner will place their hands on or just above the head, shoulders, chest, stomach, hips, knees, feet and back in different positions (similar to the illustration below). Each position is held for approximately 3 to 5 minutes and the entire treatment usually lasts an average of 25 to 55 minutes, depending on client needs. Little or no pressure will be applied and no oils will be used. If you do not wish to be touched then the hands can be left 1-3 inches above your body. This does not affect the healing process in any way.

Practitioners follow a series of hand positions, but can place their hands anywhere you would like them to, for example, over an injury or other area of discomfort.  The teachings say that the energy will flow where it is needed, no matter where the hands are or where the energy is sent. It seeks out to heal the CAUSE of an illness not just the symptoms.  The energy will be sent at the highest level that is right for you and the amount you need to bring your mind and body into balance.

Remote or distant Session:

You can also receive a remote or distant healing. The practitioner and you do not need to be in the same room, the same city or even the same country.  It can be done using a photograph, a personal item from the recipient or with nothing but a piece of a paper with the recipient's name on it. Reiki sent remotely is equal to, or at times reportedly better, results as a session in person.

In a remote session, the practitioner will use a surrogate, such as a stuffed animal, representing recipient. They will use all the hand positions and the energy will be sent to you. You will receive the same benefits as if you were to have a hands-on session. The difference is that you are in the comfort of your own home and can be in any position that is comfortable to you. You can have your favorite relaxing music playing, candles and incenses burning or even be watching you favorite T. V. show or movie. Of course, if you have things distracting you, you may not feel all the sensations, but will still receive all the benefits.

Whichever session you chose, Hands-on or Remote, All healing is done "for the highest good of all with harm to none".

What will I feel with a Reiki Session?

If you observe a Reiki session, it might not seem like anything is happening.  But when you experience a Reiki session, you will know different.  While the effects vary from individual to individual, most people experience deep relaxation and you may even fall asleep.

The sensation felt by a recipient of Reiki is usually a deep feeling of warmth or cool and comfort. Others feel a mild tingle, throbbing or pulsing sensation. Some experience a sensation of "floating" or of feeling very light. Some people don’t feel any physical sensation but describe mental or emotional changes, such as a sense of calmness or peacefulness. Nearly everyone experiences a Reiki treatment as deeply relaxing.

Results are sometimes very subtle and gentle.  Some say they feel little during the session, but afterwards enjoy a sense of calmness and well-being, and a deep restful sleep.  It is possible to experience powerful sensations or emotions during and/or after a session.  The practitioner will want to know about all of your experiences/sensations to the degree that you are comfortable sharing them.

A session creates a wonderful, glowing radiance that is deeply relaxing and includes many “healing” effects for both the client and practitioner, including physical, emotional, mental or spiritual.

What can Reiki help with?

Reiki is both powerful and gentle. It has a long history of aiding in the healing of virtually all known illness and injury, including serious problems such as cancer and heart disease, as well as skin problems, insomnia, lack of confidence, anxiety, low energy, etc.  It seeks out to heal the CAUSE of an illness not just the symptoms.  Reiki supports any medical or supplemental healing method, however, it is not to be considered a substitute for traditional medical or behavioral health treatment.  We recommend that you consult with your regular health care provider.

Reiki eases pain and stress and promotes restful sleep, healing and relaxation.  Relaxation promotes a host of benefits for the mind and body including a increased sense of well-being, release of muscle tension, and relief from anxiety and depression.  In addition, relaxation has been shown to help restore immune function and improve circulation, enhancing healing throughout your body. Reiki is healthy and pleasurable.  One of the greatest benefits is the opportunity to let go and enjoy being nurtured and cared for.

Reiki is not massage, hypnosis, or a tool for diagnosing illness.  Reiki is a technique that addresses both chronic and acute conditions, gently and powerfully promoting balance among all the body’s systems and the normal regenerative processes of the body and mind.

Who can benefit from Reiki?

Anyone or anything can benefit from Reiki. From a new born to the individuals in second childhood (seniors). Plants and animals can even receive a session and have tremendous benefits from it, actually they can receive quicker results, as they are more open to the energies and do not carry all of the issue we as human being do.

The gentle art of Reiki draws on universal life energy to benefit people and animals of any age and in any state of health.  It offers comfort, nurture and support for the good health and balance of your mind, body, and emotions.

How does it work?

Reiki is a therapy that works similarly to acupuncture in that it rebalances, revitalizes and realigns the body’s energy by removing blocked or stagnant "chi" (energy).  This energy comes directly from the highest spiritual Source and has its own intelligence. It knows exactly what and where the issues are that is in need of assistance. The practitioner is simply a channel for the energy. The amount of energy received by the person depends on the level that will most benefit them for their highest good and willingness to receive it. When no more energy is needed, the transfer stops.

The body's healing ability is stimulated when the individual is completely relaxed. Reiki can put you in the state of relaxation necessary for healing.  When our body experiences long-term or chronic stress, it may be challenging for the individual to relax.  It may take more than one session to achieve your goal.  The results of Reiki are cumulative and some benefits are often noted after the first session or two, depending on the individual's baseline state of well-being.

Is it a religion or against my religion?

That's a very good and common question! While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religious. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to receive, learn, or use Reiki.  All that is required is an open mind and heart, and a willingness to heal.  A great website for Christians with questions about Reiki is www.christianreiki.org.

Is there any Research and do Health care providers utilize it?

Medical research has focused upon verifying Reiki’s effects rather than explaining how it works.  The results are very impressive.  One study showed a highly significant reduction in pain, following Reiki treatment.  Another study cited improvement in immune and nervous system functioning and increased mobility in patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, and fibromyalgia. At Columbia/HCA Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, surgical patients decreased their use of pain medications, stayed for shorter periods, and reported increased satisfaction with pre and post surgical Reiki sessions.

Addition Clinical research on the effects of Reiki therapy on a variety of physical and mental disorders in currently underway at several medical centers throughout the U.S. with the assistance of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH); Complementary and Alternative Medicine.  Published reports have noted a positive effect on pain control, enhanced relaxation, and increased circulation in human research subjects.  For more information, please visit www.nccam.nih.gov.

Reiki is being used by a rapidly growing number of hospitals all over the world, Reiki complements medical treatment, natural therapies, and massage therapy.  Reiki increases a caregiver’s ability to provide patient continued support and is easily practiced in all hospital environments from outpatient to intensive care.

Reiki is being successfully integrated into numerous clinical settings to complement medical care and psychological counselling.  It is gentle enough to offer support and reduce the discomforts of pregnant women and can help ease the pain of childbirth.  Hospitals such as the Tucson Medical Center in Arizona, St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco, California and St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Pennsylvania have teams of Reiki practitioners available to a range of patients, including those with cancer or recovering from surgery.  Reiki is especially appreciated in hospice care where its ability to alleviate pain and anxiety for both patient and family members where it is so greatly needed.

What is the History of Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a natural healing technique thought to have originated in Tibet thousands of years ago. It was rediscovered by a Japanese monk, Dr. Usui, in the nineteenth century, who endeavored to learn how Christ healed the ill. After a 10 year journey, during which he studied the sacred teachings of Japan, China, India and Tibet, the complete system of Reiki was revealed to him during a mystical experience on a holy mountain.
